In winter of 2018, Mid-South Roofing of Atlanta, GA requested estimates from CertaPro Painters of Atlanta to paint the exterior of their building located just East of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The scope included all metal siding on the building, as well as the front soffit. The bid was subsequently approved and work was commenced on Memorial Day Weekend.

A full prime coat of Sherwin Williams ProCryl Primer was first applied to all surfaces in order to inhibit future rusting, as well as seal the surface for proper intercoat bonding. One coat of Sherwin Williams Direct-to-metal (DTM) Egg-Shell Acrylic was then applied on all painted surfaces throughout the exterior of the building. This coating pairing worked well with this substrate due to the severity of UV damage and overall aesthetic appearance of the metal substrate. A higher sheen top coat would have drawn attention to the imperfections in the metal.

While the overall job scope was relatively simple in nature, three areas required special attention from project managers and painting crews:

  1. The sheer size of the facility demanded high ladder work and frequent movements to cover the large surface area of the building.
  2. The power to the building needed to be blanketed by Georgia Power prior to the start of painting. Blanketing of the lines provided a safe environment for our crew while not shutting power to the building.
  3. The business continued to remain open and active with high vehicle traffic around the yard and loading areas. This activity made good communications and a well thought out game plan imperative between all parties involved in this project.
